IASTM - what it is and how it can help!

Ever wondered what IASTM was? Read on in our latest blog post!

Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a practical manual therapy treatment that can aid in treating individuals with soft tissue dysfunction. IASTM is rapidly growing in popularity due to its effectiveness and efficiency while remaining non-invasive.

Common diagnoses treated by IASTM are:

  • Plantar Fasciitis

  • Post-Surgical Scars

  • Medial and Lateral Epicondylitis

  • Myofascial Restrictions

  • Musculoskeletal Imbalances

  • Rotator Cuff Tendinitis

  • Muscle Strains

  • Non-Acute Bursitis

  • Chronic Joint Swelling Associated with Sprains/Strains

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Back, Hip and Neck Pain

  • Trigger Finger

  • IT Band Syndrome

IASTM is performed with specially designed instruments that detect and treat fascial restrictions, encourage circulation and improve mobility. Your specially trained therapist will use a variety of different speeds and pressures when practicing this particular modality, depending on your condition and your individual needs. As in any manual therapy treatment, supplementation with exercises and additional techniques should be used in conjunction with IASTM.

The local application of pressure through IASTM tools promotes the body’s natural healing mechanism.  The nerve endings in the skin are stimulated triggering the brain to send more blood and oxygen to any injured areas. This increased blood flow brings nutrients needed for healing, while also helping to flush away substances that can cause pain and inflammation. As a result, this technique can speed up recovery from injuries and reduce chronic pain caused by inflammation allowing you to recover and return to your life more quickly!

At Peak Wellness Collective, our RMT Miranda Hofmann is trained and certified in IASTM, book with Miranda to add IASTM to your next treatment!
