Benefits of Virtual Counselling

Why Virtual over in person counselling?

All things virtual, from home, and at a distance have been on the rise in this post- Covid-19 era. The convenience and ease of staying in your own space has been embraced by many disciplines, including counselling services. So what is virtual counselling, and why might someone consider it over in person counselling? Virtual counselling is psychotherapy that is conducted over the internet by a qualified counsellor (Cherry, 2023). It can be accessed anywhere, and anytime using a laptop, desktop, or smartphone (Cherry, 2023).

As a practitioner, I have seen that there are many benefits that draw folks toward virtual counselling. Primarily, virtual counselling can be just as effective as in person counselling. Your practitioner will work with you essentially in the same way they would if you were sitting in an office with them. However, you get to enjoy the benefits of counselling from the comfort of your own space. I have heard from many clients that this is the biggest and best feature for them.

Virtual counselling also helps eliminate many barriers that accessing in person counselling can have. If you are living in a rural community or it is a lengthy commute to a counselling office, it can be challenging to get the support when you need it. Additionally, having access to transportation like a vehicle or city transit can be difficult, frustrating, and costly. Lastly, having varying mental and physical abilities can pose as a challenge to being in person for a session. Virtual counselling eliminates these barriers!

When you decide to access virtual counselling, these are some of my favourite tips and reminders. Ensure that you have a device that allows audio and video functions, this will help you have a smooth session. Find a space that is quiet and confidential, without your parents, partner, or children. Unless previously discussed with your counsellor, this session is for you and only you (pets are totally okay though). Grab your favourite drink and cozy item like a blanket, sweater, or something to fidget with to help you feel grounded. My favourites are my heated blanket and an iced coffee. If you are nervous or curious about your virtual session, reach out to your counsellor. They will be happy to answer any questions and make you feel at ease.

Warmly,

Nicole Greenstreet, RCC
